Caregivers Often Struggle with Questions and Concerns Like:

  • Mom just sits there.
  • What should we talk about today?
  • How do I keep the conversation going?
  • I’ve run out of things to say.
  • Our visits have become awkward.
  • I don’t know if I’m doing this right!

The enhanced Guided Reminiscence structure from Gentle Recall is your guide to help you achieve a deeper connection with the person in your care.

You’ll never have to wonder what to talk about again.

What is Guided Reminiscence?

Guided Reminiscence is a gentle activity, encouraging a person living with dementia to recall and share memories from earlier in life. Using familiar topics, photographs, music, sayings, objects, or simple questions, a caregiver guides the conversation without testing memory or expecting “right” answers.

The goal is to enjoy the conversation and the feelings it brings, not necessarily to remember every detail correctly.

The activity works best in a calm, relaxed setting with open-ended prompts that invite stories and personal experiences. Caregivers listen with interest, follow the person’s lead, and accept memories as they are rather than correcting mistakes. Even brief conversations can be meaningful when they focus on comfort, connection, and shared moments.

Guided Reminiscence can help reduce anxiety, encourage conversation, and strengthen the bond between the person with dementia and their caregiver. It often brings moments of joy, confidence, and a renewed sense of identity by focusing on long-term memories that may remain more accessible than recent ones.

Most importantly, Guided Reminiscence reminds both people that meaningful connection is still possible at every stage of the dementia journey.

How is Guided Reminiscence Different from Gentle Recall?

GR Products Comparison v2

You are probably familiar with Gentle Recall’s prompts, asking the participant to finish the phrase:

Don’t beat around the…

Most people naturally respond: “bush.” Familiar sayings (idioms) often trigger memories that can lead to wide-ranging and meaningful conversations.

This recall activity is a fun way to mentally exercise. It is a great way to get started and is free to use here on GentleRecall.com and the video formats on YouTube. Learn more about the benefits of recall.

What Guided Reminiscence does is give you additional tools to make an even deeper connection!

You can’t teach an old dog new… tricks.

A 16th century proverb suggesting that it can be challenging to change someone’s habits or ways of thinking, especially if they’ve been doing something a certain way for a long time.

  • What is something new you learned later in life that made you proud of yourself?
  • What’s your favorite type of dog?

FAQs

How often will I receive an email?

You will receive an email every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each edition will be new, with unique and engaging topics.

Is Guided Reminiscence printable?

Each email is formatted to view comfortably from a phone, tablet, or computer. In each edition, a link to a PDF is provided that has been formatted to fit on one page for easy printing. Printing is optional.

How long is each Guided Reminiscence session?

That really depends on the person in your care. One prompt at a time, with just one or two discussion questions may be all they want. Five to ten minutes may do it.

However, some people may enjoy consuming all five prompts as soon as they arrive in your email in box. There can be a lot of reminiscing discussion, spanning 30-60 minutes or more. The key is to go with the flow and allow their responses guide where (and how deep) you go next.

Is there a subscription time commitment?

No. You can cancel at any time. When you cancel, emails keep coming until what would have been your next monthly renewal date.

I facilitate multiple Memory Cafes. Can I subscribe once and use them at each location?

Absolutely! Guided Reminiscence is very convenient for Memory Cafe facilitators, home healthcare professionals, and for Activity Directors in living communities.

Do I need special training?

No. We all have conversations with others every day. Guided Reminiscence simply gives you the structure to have more guided conversations for much deeper connection.
